Jaden Schwartz has hat trick, Blues beat Blackhawks 5-2

Jaden Schwartz had his third career hat trick to help the St. Louis Blues beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2 on Wednesday night.
Schwartz has four goals and six assists this season and has at least one point in six of the Blues' first seven games. It was his 51st career multi-point game and fourth this season.
Vladimir Tarasenko had a goal and an assist, Kyle Brodziakalso scored, and Jake Allen made 22 saves. The Blues snapped a two-game losing streak
Duncan Keith and Ryan Hartman had late goals for Blackhawks, and Corey Crawford made 28 saves.
Schwartz opened the scoring at 4:46 of the first period, tucking in a backhander off Tarasenko's feed.
Schwartz left the game eight minutes later after going awkwardly head-first into the boards after getting tangled with Richard Panik on a partial short-handed break.
Schwartz returned in the second period, and gave the Blues a 2-0 lead at 5:59. Allen's outlet pass off the boards created a 2-on-1 with Schwartz and Sammy Blais. It was Allen's fourth career assist.
Tarasenko made it 3-0 two minutes later, scoring his fifth of the season by stripping Artem Anisimov in front of the Chicago net.
St. Louis outshot Chicago 26-8 in the first two periods, including 17-4 in the second. The four shots in each of the first two periods were a season low for the Blackhawks in a period.
Brodziak scored at 7:01 of the third. It was the first time this season the Blues' third or fourth line scored.
After Keith and Hartman scored for Chicago, Schwartz completed the hat trick with an empty-net goal.
NOTES: Blackhawks television analyst Eddie Olczyk, who is battling colon cancer, received a standing ovation from the crowd of 18,752 after being recognized late in the first period. Olczyk was back in the booth for the first time since his diagnosis in August. ... Blues F Alexander Steen (broken left hand) was activated from injured reserve and made his season debut. To make room, the Blues waived F Wade Megan. ... Blues F Paul Stastny is one point shy of 600 for his career. ... Blackhawks C Nick Schmaltz (upper body) returned after missing four games.

DeBrincat helps Blackhawks to 3-1 win over Montreal

It was only a matter of time before Alex DeBrincat scored his first NHL goal.
The 5-foot-7 right winger, who was a scoring machine for the Erie Otters in junior hockey, got his first as a Blackhawk and set up one for Artem Anisimov as Chicago spoiled the Montreal Canadiens' home opener with a 3-1 victory on Tuesday night.
And tallying his first against a Vezina Trophy winner like Carey Price made it that much better.
"It's pretty cool," said DeBrincat. "He's a great goalie. I was lucky enough to get one past him."
The 19-year-old DeBrincat was drafted 39th overall by Chicago in 2016, on a pick obtained in a trade from Montreal, in the midst of a junior career that saw him score 167 goals in 193 games over three seasons for Erie.
Last season, he was voted top player in the Ontario Hockey League after a 65-goal season.
So it was no surprise for him to find the net at the next level of hockey.
"You want to score your first goal but you know it's not going to be easy," the Michigan native said. "I tried to keep it out of my mind. It was bound to come sooner or later."
Brandon Saad also scored for Chicago (3-0-1), which was coming off an overtime loss Monday night in Toronto.
Tomas Plekanec scored for Montreal (1-3-0) when he picked off a Ryan Hartman pass in the Blackhawks zone, wheeled and scored on a wrist shot inside the near post 1:15 into the game.
Patrick Sharp intercepted a Jordie Benn clearing attempt and fed DeBrincat for a one-timer goal at 17:53. Only 19 seconds later, Saad got this fifth goal of the season on a tap-in while finishing a three-man rush with Jonathan Toews and Richard Panik.
DeBrincat made the decisive pass in a tic-tac-toe play with Cody Franson that Anisimov finished with a tap-in on a power play 10:44 into the second frame.
The Canadiens, who outshot the Blackhawks 42-25, have lost three in a row and scored only four goals in as many games. They went 0 for 5 on the power play and are now 0 for 14 for the season.
Coach Claude Julien juggled his lines halfway through the game, which produced several good chances but no goals against Corey Crawford, who shut Montreal down after the early Plekanec goal.
"Confidence is low now," said Julien. "We have to fight our way through this.
"We don't want to make excuses, we want to find solutions. That's how you become a mentally hard team. We could use some puck luck, but there are lots of things we can do about it. I see the potential on this team that we are going to turn this around. We don't lack confidence, we're just squeezing the stick a little."

Matthews scores in OT, Maple Leafs rally to beat Blackhawks

Auston Matthews had his own goalie taking pity on their opponent after his latest timely goal.
Matthews beat Anton Forsberg 3:43 into overtime to lift the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 4-3 comeback win against the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday night.
The 20-year-old Matthews had very little space to work with but ripped a wrist shot over Forsberg's glove for his second goal of the season.
"I think that puck's still sitting back up there," said Toronto netminder Fredrik Andersen. "Not a lot of guys can stop that puck in this league. Hell of a goal."
Matthews's goal came on a 2-on-1 and capped three in a row to erase Chicago's 3-1 lead.
"I just walked in and tried to fake a pass, get (Forsberg) leaning a bit and snuck it by him," Matthews said.
"I thought we showed a lot of poise being able to crawl back into it," he added. "As the game went on we got better and better and that's the way you want to play."
Matthews played much of the night matched up against Chicago's top line with Patrick Kane. Matthews finished with six shots on net and the winning goal while Kane, who entered with 22 points in 13 career games against Toronto, finished minus-three with one shot and no points.
"Auston was determined, he was playing head to head against Kane all night, did a real nice job," said Leafs coach Mike Babcock.
Nikita ZaitsevConnor Brown and James van Riemsdyk also scored for the Maple Leafs, who have won their first three games.
Jan Rutta, Jonathan Toews and Richard Panik had goals for the Blackhawks.
Andersen made 18 saves for the win while Forsberg stopped 39 shots.
Outside of the opening three minutes, the first period belonged to the Blackhawks, and they went into the intermission up 2-0.
Rutta scored 3:46 into the game when he wheeled around the back of the net and tossed the puck out front, where it hit Toronto center Mitch Marner's stick and squeaked through Andersen and the post.
Eric Fehr had a great chance to tie it three minutes later, but was turned away by Forsberg, and Chicago went down the ice and doubled its advantage.
Toews made it 2-0 when he banged in a rebound over the left pad of Andersen with 12:53 to play in the first.
It could have been a three-goal edge for Chicago if Andersen didn't turn away Patrick Sharp on a breakaway late in the first.
It wasn't until the midway point of the second that Toronto picked up its pace and was awarded its first power-play opportunity after some sustained pressure by Matthews in the offensive zone.
The Leafs failed to capitalize on the man advantage, but Zaitsev put them on the board soon after, streaking in from the Blackhawks blue line and taking a pass from Brown before snapping the puck five-hole on Forsberg at 10:20.
Matthews nearly tied the game on a 2-on-1 rush five minutes later with a toe-drag into a wrist shot, but Forsberg stayed with him and got his right arm on the puck.
The final eight minutes of the second were filled with minor penalties and lots of 4-on-4 hockey, but no one was able to take advantage of the open ice.
Matthews had another good scoring chance before the period was through, but Forsberg was there again to stop him.
Toronto was behind 2-1 after 40 minutes despite outshooting Chicago 26-15.
"We lost a lot of momentum there, fortunate to come out of (the second) with the lead," said Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville.
"Second period they had 10 scoring chances so (Forsberg) did a good job keeping the lead for us."
Zach Hyman created a scoring chance for himself early in the third only to be turned aside by Forsberg.
Forsberg's play allowed the Blackhawks to restore their two-goal lead 7:52 into the third.
Panik took the puck off the end boards after it ricocheted in front from a point shot and slotted it into an empty net on the power play.
Leafs coach Mike Babcock started shuffling his lines late in the third and it paid off with two goals in less than three minutes.
First, Brown beat Forsberg with Leo Komarov setting the screen in front with seven minutes to go in regulation.
Then, van Riemsdyk tied the game on the power play, deflecting a Tyler Bozak shot past Forsberg with 4:18 remaining.
NOTES: Both clubs entered the night with a league-high 15 goals for in their first two games. ... Leafs defenseman Connor Carrick was replaced in the lineup by Andreas Borgman.

Saad, Kane, Toews lead Blackhawks past Blue Jackets

The Blackhawks and their marquee players are starting the season in high gear.
Brandon SaadPatrick Kane and Jonathan Toews each had a goal and assist to lead Chicago over the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-1 on Saturday night.
Richard Panik also scored and Jan Rutta got his first NHL goal as the Blackhawks followed up on a season-opening 10-1 rout of Pittsburgh with another overwhelming performance.
Saad, one of four players to open the season with a hat trick this week, has four goals and an assist in his first two games. Kane boosted his totals to two goals and four assists.
"I thought we did some good things offensively," Kane said. "But two big wins. Hopefully we can build off this."
Saad returned to Chicago in an offseason deal that sent Artemi Panarin to the Blue Jackets, and he looks better than ever.
The rugged 24-year-old forward spent his first three seasons with the Blackhawks before he was traded to Columbus in 2015 in a salary cap squeeze - and just before he became a restricted free agent.
"We're saying he's not a man-child anymore," Kane said. "He's just a man."
Coach Joel Quenneville was more specific about Saad.
"His quickness has been very noticeable" Quenneville said. "Quick to pucks, quick to beating a guy to the net. That line (Saad-Toews-Panik) was excellent again tonight."
Chicago center Nick Schmaltz was hit hard by two defensemen as Kane scored the opening goal 1:33 in. He later left the game with an upper-body injury and is expected to miss at least two games, Quenneville said.
Sonny Milano scored for the Blue Jackets, who blanked the New York Islanders 5-0 in their opener Friday in Columbus.
Corey Crawford made 32 saves for Chicago, while Joonas Korpisalo blocked 24 shots.
Panarin got a loud ovation during a first-period video tribute in his return to the United Center, but the Blue Jackets weren't able to make much noise or sustain pressure offensively.
"Were going to face teams like that and we've got to find a way to stop the momentum and try to chip away," coach John Tortorella said. "I don't think we were sharp, right on through our lineup."
The Blackhawks were on target for second straight game.
"It's unique team and you've got to play against them with respect," Korpisalo said.
The Blackhawks jumped ahead 2-0 with a dominant first period.
Kane scored on the Blackhawks' first shot when he was left open at the low edge of the right circle.
Jack Johnson and Gabriel Carlsson leveled Schmaltz on the left side of the crease during the play. Schmaltz took a minute to get up, then skated slowly to the bench with help from trainer Mike Gapski.
Saad made it 2-0 at 6:04 with a power-play goal when he converted a rebound from a goalmouth scrum.
Chicago extended its lead to 4-1 after 40 minutes.
Set up by Saad, Toews one-timed in his first goal this season from the left circle at 10:14 of the second. The play was set up when Panik knocked Seth Jones off the puck behind the Columbus net.
Milano cut it to 3-1 31 seconds later when he poked in Nick Foligno's feed that slid along the goal line behind Crawford.
Rutta pinched in to the right circle and scored on a shot that deflected in off Korpisalo's glove at 12:51 of the second to make it 4-1.
Saad narrowly missed connecting again during a power-play midway through the third. Panik completed the scoring with 5:55 left when he whipped in a loose puck after a face-off.
NOTES: NBC and Blackhawks TV analyst Eddie Olczyk visited the United Center press box after having surgery for colon cancer 11 weeks ago. Some in the crowd of 21,264, chanted "Eddie, Eddie," when a live shot of Olczyk, who played 16 seasons in the NHL, was shown on the scoreboard. ... Schmaltz had hobbled off the ice in the third period of Thursday's game, but was back on a line with Kane and Ryan Hartman for his first shift Saturday before being injured again. ... RW Tommy Wingels made his Blackhawks debut as C Tanner Kero sat out. Wingels, who signed a one-year free agent deal, is from Chicago's north suburbs. ... The Blackhawks had a pregame video tribute and moment of silence for Pierre Pilote, their captain from 1961 to 1968, who died last month at age 85.

Saad, Blackhawks pound Penguins 10-1 in opener

Brandon Saad was a force on both ends of the ice. Patrick Kane made a couple of dazzling passes. Nick Schmaltz showed off his speed, and Ryan Hartman was everywhere.
It was quite a show, especially for opening night.
Saad scored three times in his return to Chicago and Hartman had a goal and four assists, helping the Blackhawks pound the Pittsburgh Penguins 10-1 on Thursday night.
Schmaltz added two goals and an assist as Chicago kicked off its season in style with a runaway victory against the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions. Kane had a goal and three assists in the Blackhawks' highest scoring game since a 10-1 win against Winnipeg on Oct. 12, 1988.
"It was almost like it wasn't a real game or something," Kane said. "It was a fun start to be a part of."
Pittsburgh was coming off a 5-4 overtime loss to St. Louis in its season opener on Wednesday, and it looked every bit like a team on the second half of back-to-back nights. Antti Niemiwas pulled after allowing four goals on 13 shots in his Penguins debut, forcing Matt Murray to come in after he took the loss against the Blues.
Sidney Crosby found Phil Kessel for a power-play goal at 2:05 of the second period, but Chicago already had a 5-0 lead at that point. It was the most goals allowed by Pittsburgh since a 10-8 loss to San Jose on Jan. 13, 1996.
"It's early, but it's disturbing," coach Mike Sullivan said. "When you lose a game like that it's disturbing, I don't care when it is in the season. And so, we've got to do some soul-searching and right now, we are simply not playing the game the right way."
The Blackhawks won the Central Division last season and finished with the most points in the Western Conference. But they were swept by Nashville in their second consecutive first-round loss, leading to a flurry of moves by admittedly angry general manager Stan Bowman.
Chicago, which won the Stanley Cup in 2010, 2013 and 2015, scored three goals in 13 periods in the series against Nashville. It got four in the first 9:16 against Pittsburgh.
"As a team, that's how we want to play, with that speed, the quick transition, getting pucks down low, past their D," Saad said. "We have a message on our style of play, and I think we did a great job tonight."
Hartman scored off a slick pass from Kane at 6:21. After Saad got his first off a rush with Richard Panik, Kane made another great pass to set up Schmaltz's backhander at 7:34. Saad then beat Niemi with a well-placed shot through a crowd in front, and the rout was on.
"We made mistakes and they buried them," Crosby said. "It wasn't, you know, just you make those mistakes and you get away with it. They capitalized on every one."
The 24-year-old Saad began his career with Chicago and helped the Blackhawks win two Stanley Cups before he was traded to Columbus after the 2015 season. Bowman got him back in a blockbuster trade with the Blue Jackets in June, parting with dynamic winger Artemi Panarin in a multiplayer deal.
For one night at least, it looked like a smart move. Saad, a Pittsburgh native, finished off his hat trick at 5:21 of the third, and Brent Seabrook made it 10-1 with a rebound goal with 6:15 remaining.
"It was obviously a great beginning," coach Joel Quenneville said.
Hartman set a career high for points and assists in Chicago's highest-scoring opener, topping an 8-6 victory at Nashville on Oct. 5, 2006. Patrick Sharp also scored in his return to Chicago after signing a team-friendly, one-year deal with the Blackhawks in the offseason. Corey Crawford made 28 saves and Panik added a goal and an assist.
NOTES: Schmaltz gingerly skated off the ice in the third and was helped to the locker room, but Quenneville said he was fine. ... Sharp's first-period goal was his 600th career point. ... Blackhawks F Marian Hossa was greeted with a huge roar when he was introduced with the team before the game. Hossa has been ruled out for the season due to a progressive skin disorder, and it's unclear if he will be able to play again. ... Former Blackhawks F Bryan Bickell received a standing ovation when he took one more skate with the team during the pregame festivities. He was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis last November and signed a one-day contract Wednesday to retire with the Blackhawks.

Forsberg makes 38 saves for Blackhawks in win over Blue Jackets

Anton Forsberg made 38 saves for the Chicago Blackhawks in a 5-2 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets at United Center.
Forsberg was part of the June 23 trade that sent forward Artemi Panarin to Columbus. Panarin had three shots on goal in 22:01.
Nick Schmaltz and Cody Franson each had a goal and an assist, and Laurent Dauphin, Jan Rutta and Vinnie Hinostroza scored for Chicago, which scored four goals in the second period.
Seth Jones scored twice for Columbus. He ended Forsberg's shutout with a goal 5:52 into the third period and had a power-play goal with 3:19 remaining.

Van Riemsdyk scores late, Blackhawks beat Stars 5-3

In a period that included goals from stars Patrick KaneJonathan ToewsJamie Benn and Tyler Seguin, a rare one from Trevor van Riemsdyk proved to be the difference.
Van Riemsdyk put in a rebound for his second goal of the season with 4:03 left, lifting Chicago over the Dallas Stars 5-3 on Saturday night. Goalie Kari Lehtonen stopped a close-range shot by Artem Anisimov, but van Riemsdyk followed to put the puck under Lehtonen and make it 4-3.
The 25-year-old van Riemsdyk has five goals in 130 career games. Rookie Gustav Forsling also scored his second of the season for the Blackhawks, who are in second place behind Minnesota in the Central Division.
"We're going to need everybody," Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. "Talk about everybody or anybody, not just worried about the young guys. We need everyone to be progressing at a good rate here. Our last two games, there were a lot of good things."
Van Riemsdyk's older brother, James, also had a late game-winning goal on Saturday, helping the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Boston Bruins 6-5.
Toews added an empty-net goal in the final second for his 10th of the season. Kane tied the game with his 17th goal just 35 seconds after Seguin put the Stars ahead 3-2 at 9:24.
Kane beat defenseman John Klingberg, skated across the goal mouth and put the puck into the right side of the net.
"We're behind and all of a sudden Kane makes an extremely amazing play with quickness and beats (Lehtonen) with a nice move and we're back in the game," Quenneville said. "Another nice finish on the winner and we'll take it. We came back in a situation where lately our thirds haven't been great."
Dallas is 0-18-2 when trailing after two periods.
"When we took the lead, I would want (the Blackhawks) to earn it," Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. "They didn't earn it.
"The numbers don't describe the real bad plays and the numbers don't mean anything if you make a play you don't need to make. We know Kane's on the ice. John struggled on that play."
Benn tied it 40 seconds into the third, and Radek Faksa also scored for Dallas. Lehtonen made 31 saves.
Corey Crawford stopped 31 shots for Chicago, and the Blackhawks are 4-0 against Dallas this season. Ryan Hartman (12th) and Forsling scored in the second period for the Blackhawks.
To start the second, Faksa chased down the puck low in the left faceoff circle and sent a shot from a sharp angle behind Crawford eight seconds in.
Hartman took a pass from Tanner Kero on the edge of the left circle and beat Lehtonen at 6:34.
With the score tied, Lehtonen stopped a breakaway by Kane at 8:08. Just 26 seconds later, Forsling fired a shot from the blue line through the slot and over a screen by Marcus Kruger, who ducked as the puck passed him.
Benn's goal was on a backhand from the left of the net.
NOTES: Faksa's goal was the fastest in the second period in Dallas' 23 seasons. The previous fastest was 13 seconds. The fastest in any period was by Joe Nieuwendyk seven seconds into a game at Detroit on Nov. 13, 1998. ... The Blackhawks had lost three of four games before Saturday. ... Dallas finished a season-high six-game homestand 2-2-2. ... Anisimov has gone 13 games without a goal. He and Marian Hossa each had two assists. Hossa has 41 points (21 goals, 20 assists) in 45 career games vs. Dallas.

Artem Anisimov lifts Blackhawks past Devils in OT

Down by a goal and late in a four-minute power play in the closing minutes of the third period, Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville took a chance and pulled his goaltender with more than two minutes to play.
It didn't take long for Marian Hossa to make the gamble pay off, setting the stage for Artem Anisimov to be a hero in overtime.
Hossa tied the score with 2:11 remaining in regulation and Anisimov scored on a rebound at 1:15 of overtime as the Blackhawks rallied to beat New Jersey 3-2 on Friday night, handing the Devils their first home loss.
"Time was running out and 6-on-4 is a pretty dangerous look," Quenneville said. "Fortunately, we had a quick little play at the net. We had an ordinary 5-on-4 and it was running out, and I still figured with 2 1/2 (minutes) or two and change, you'd like that 6-on-4."
Hossa was the player who came off the bench with about 35-to-40 seconds left in the four-minute high-sticking penalty to Vernon Fiddler, and it only took about 10 seconds for him to score.
Jonathan Toews sent the puck from the right circle through the crease and Richard Panik and Hossa swept their sticks at it simultaneously with Devils goaltender Keith Kinkaid on the other side of the net.
"It was a free lane at the far post and I put everything I had just to make sure I put it in the net," Hossa said. "I know Richard put his stick there also, and we just shoveled everything into the net. It doesn't matter who got the goal as long as it was the tying goal."
Artemi Panarin, who also scored for Chicago, took a shot from the right circle on Anisimov's fifth goal of the season. Kinkaid, who made 26 saves, stopped the shot but he no chance on the rebound.
"The puck came to me in the right position, and I just put it in," Anisimov said.
Crawford had kept the Blackhawks in the game in the first two periods, stopping 25 of 26 shots, including all 16 in the second period.
Chicago outshot New Jersey 17-4 in the third period and overtime.
PA Parenteau and John Moore scored for New Jersey, which was 3-0 at home. Kinkaid made 26 saves in his first start of the season.
"If you break this game down, we controlled the play, we played hard, dictated the play of the game," Devils coach John Hynes said. "We played hard enough to earn a point, and didn't play smart enough to earn two points."
Moore had given the Devils the lead early in the third period with a slam dunk in front.
Taylor Hall did all the work on Moore's first goal of the season. He carried the puck into the Blackhawks zone, skated into the right circle and sent a backhand pass toward the net. The puck hit off the skate of Devils forward Kyle Palmieri and went right to a wide-open Moore.
Panarin, who hit a goalpost in the first period, tied the score 1-1 in the second period with a power-play goal just 13 seconds after Devils defenseman Damon Severson was called for hooking.
Patrick Kane found last year's rookie of the year in the left circle and he beat Kinkaid with a shot to the top corner with Anisimov screening the goaltender.
Parenteau had given New Jersey the lead with a power-play goal with 4:28 left in the first period. Crawford stopped defenseman Yohann Auvitu's point shot, but the puck popped in the air, hit off Devils forward Devante Smith-Pelly and Parenteau swatted in the rebound for his third goal.
Crawford was the difference in second period, stopping all 16 shots by New Jersey. His best were a snapping glove on a Hall power-play chance with New Jersey ahead 1-0 and point-blank rebound stop of Beau Bennettwith the game tied 1-all.
NOTES: Blackhawks assistant coach Kevin Dineen turned 53. ... Nick Lappin, a Geneva, Illinois, native who grew up a Blackhawks' fan, make his NHL debut for the Devils. ... The Devils were 2-0 against Chicago last season. ... Anisimov leads the Blackhawk with 10 points.

Versteeg connects in shootout to lift Flames over Blackhawks

Kris Versteeg got a big shootout goal against his old team. Brian Elliott finally got his first win with his new one.
Versteeg scored the lone goal in the tiebreaker in the seventh round to give the Calgary Flames a 3-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Monday night and just their second victory this season.
Versteeg, who won Stanley Cups with the Blackhawks in 2010 and 2015, faked Corey Crawford, pulled to a stop while dragging the puck and then fired a wrist shot into a wide-open net.
"It was definitely a little nerve-wracking when everyone kept missing," said Versteeg, who took part in a shootout for the first time since the 2014-15 season. "To go in and score is a nice feeling.
"I've probably taken two shots (in the shootout) in the last three years. It doesn't happen too frequently anymore, so when I do, I just kind of black out."
Elliott made 31 saves through overtime and blocked all seven in the shootout to win for the first time with Calgary after three losses. Acquired from St. Louis in June, Elliott had allowed 14 goals in his first three starts for the Flames.
"I definitely wanted that one," Elliott said. "We haven't been playing like we wanted to and the guys came out and had a heck of an effort."
Elliott was at his best with the game tied at 2 late in the third and in overtime, when Chicago had a power play and outshot Calgary 6-1. He made two point-blank saves on Richard Panik in the final three minutes of regulation, including a toe save from the edge of the crease as time ran out.
"It was a rebound right to him in the slot, and I just tried to throw the furniture at it," Elliott said. "Got a piece of it with my skate. It was good but I was on my butt and swimming to get back up."
Sam Bennett and Sean Monahan scored in regulation for Calgary, which snapped a two-game losing streak.
Patrick Kane and Brian Campbell connected in regulation for Chicago.
Campbell's goal, his first with the Blackhawks since rejoining them as a free agent in the offseason, tied it 2-all at 4:12 of the third. Campbell's feed from the right circle, intended for Artem Anisimov, deflected in off Calgary defenseman T.J. Brodie.
Crawford blocked 29 shots through overtime and made several close in saves early to keep it close.
The Blackhawks' sputtering penalty killers permitted two power-play goals in five chances to the Flames, who entered the game having scored just once in 25 opportunities with the man advantage. Chicago has allowed 14 goals in 26 short-handed situations this season and at least one power-play goal in each of its seven games.
"It seems like it (penalty-killing) finds a different way each time," coach Joel Quenneville said.
The Flames connected on their first two power-play chances before the Blackhawks killed the final three.
"I think we got more involved as the game progressed as far as having bodies and pucks to the net," Quenneville said. "But not enough initially and it took us a while to get into that department."
Bennett knocked in Calgary's second power-play goal of the season at 4:51 of the first period. He converted a rebound of Dougie Hamilton's shot from the right circle after outmuscling Chicago defenders to the loose puck.
Kane tied it at 1 at 1:32 of the second period with a rising shot from the right circle over Elliott's glove.
Monahan converted the Flames' second power-play chance at 6:52 of the second to put Calgary ahead 2-1.
NOTES: Chicago rookie D Gustav Forsling suffered an undisclosed injury in the second period and didn't return. ... Blackhawks come back to top Leafs in shootout 5-4

The Blackhawks found themselves down two goals late in the third period before capitalizing on two mistakes by Toronto to force overtime and win in a shootout.
Jonathan Toews and Artemi Panarin scored in the shootout to give Chicago a 5-4 win over the Maple Leafs on Saturday night.
Artem Anisimov scored his second goal of the game on a rebound with 2:28 left to cut it to 4-3, then Richard Panikknocked in a loose puck in front of the goal 60 seconds later.
"We needed it," Toews said. "It wasn't pretty for a while there in the third sometimes. It looked like wherever we were going they were there and shut us down. Everything was going against us again."
But Anisimov connected as Blackhawks goalie Scott Darlingwas heading to the bench for an extra attacker. Darling was on the bench when Panik tied it with his team-leading sixth goal.
"We found a way to score a couple late ones," coach Joel Quenneviille said. "We're certainly fortunate to come back in a game like that.
"That was a little different way of going about it."
Toronto rookie William Nylander scored twice for his first multi-goal game, with the 20-year-old's second goal putting the Maple Leafs ahead 4-2 early in the third. But Toronto blew a lead in the final period for the third straight game and dropped its third straight, going 0-1-2 on a road trip.
And the Maple Leafs failed again to win at Chicago for the first time since February 2003.
"I thought we made two mistakes down the stretch," coach Mike Babcock said. "I didn't think we were on our heels at all. It was two blatant ones there, too. You can't give those up."
James van Riemsdyk scored a tie-breaking goal late in the second period and Tyler Bozak also connected for Toronto. Rookie Auston Matthews, the NHL's top 2016 draft pick, set up both of Nylander's goals and had the lone Toronto goal in the shootout.
"You just try to get open and he finds you pretty well there," Nylander said.
And Babcock and the Leafs weren't totally upset in settling for one point.
"All in all, I'm very pleased with the way we played here," Babcock said. "I thought Matthews had some great shifts. I think we're going in the right direction trending the right way."
Rookie Tyler Motte also scored for Chicago. Motte connected for the second straight game after getting his first NHL goal in a 3-2 loss at Columbus on Friday.
Chicago's Brian Campbell had three assists.
Toronto's Frederik Andersen made 31 saves through overtime. Darling blocked 30 shots.
Chicago forward Marian Hossa returned to the lineup after missing Friday's game. He scored his 500th NHL goal in a 7-4 win over Philadelphia on Tuesday, but left in the third period after blocking a shot.
Anisimov opened the scoring 3:36 in, completing a 2-on-1 break created when Panarin beat Nazem Kadri with a nifty move after entering the Toronto zone.
Bozak tied it 1-all with 14 seconds left in the first on a deflection from the slot despite being covered. Jake Gardiner's low shot ticked off Bozak's stick.
Nylander's power-play goal at 9:28 second put Toronto ahead 2-1.
Motte tied it 2-all 1:40 later. Andersen stopped Motte's initial deflection of Campbell's shot, but Motte batted in the rebound.
Van Riemsdyk made it 3-2 with 1:44 left in the second when he swept in a loose rebound from the edge of the crease.
Nylander connected again 4:46 into the third period, firing into a half-open net from the slot after taking Matthews' slick feed to make it 4-2.
NOTES: Blackhawks D Trevor van Riemsdyk, James' brother, will miss about a month with an upper-body injury, coach Joel Quenneville said before the game. The defenseman left Friday's game in Columbus in the second period, holding his right arm after crashing into the net. He appeared in 82 games last season, but van Riemsdyk was a healthy scratch for three games following Chicago's season opener and returned to the lineup against the Blue Jackets. ... Quenneville said there's no change in F Andrew Desjardins' (lower-body) status and doesn't know when he'll resume skating. ... Toronto D Martin Marincin (lower body) missed his second game.
